The Beginners Guide to Meditation
Meditation nourishes the mind in the same way that food nourishes the body.
When you meditate, It is most beneficial if you set aside a specific time daily and wear loose comfortable clothes. There are many types of meditation but most have four elements in common: a quiet location with as few distractions as possible, a specific comfortable posture, a focus of attention, and an open attitude.
Here is an easy quick Meditation exercise that can be used at any time:
STOP
S=Stop
Stop what you are doing and put things down for a moment.
T=Take
Take 2-3 nice deep breaths. Belly breathing.
O=Observe
Observe how you are feeling. Note what thoughts, feelings, and emotions are running through your mind. Realize that thoughts are not permanent- they come and go. The simple act of naming your emotions has proven to turn the volume down on the fight or flight circuits in the brain. Notice your posture and if you have any aches and pains.
P=Proceed
Proceed with something that can support you in the moment. Call a friend, take a walk, have a cup of coffee or tea.
